all about taunton

All About Taunton

The accommodation is within close proximity of Crealy Adventure Park, the West Somerset Railway, Taunton Castle and Taunton Racecourse. In the town of Taunton you'll also find plenty of shops and restaurants.

Taunton is one of the most beautiful areas of the West Country boasting a range of locks, landscapes and meadows many of which are classed as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Amidst it's countryside escapes lies a collection of quiet villages and hamlets popular with tourists and explorers looking for a quieter escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

History

The town has over 1000 years of religious and military history with it's 10th century castle dating back to the Anglo Saxon period, later becoming a priory. The Normans later built a stone castle on the site which is now a popular attraction. The name Taunton is taken from it's location on the River Tone - it's literal meaning of Town on the Tone is easily deduced. The town has survived many battles and rebellions including the 1451 Wars of the Roses where Queen Margeret and her troops passed through towards the Battle of Tewkesbury. Although Taunton has survived many conflicts, it has lost many of the medieval and Tudor buildings leaving only larger landmark buildings such as Taunton Castle. The Grand Western Canal reached Taunton in 1839 with railways arriving only 3 years later in 1842. The transport network crucially supports many national business that have come to reside here including head offices for Debenhams, General Electric, Defra and the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The location has also become infamous for it's production of cider throughout the years and boasts a range of brands due to the region's perfect conditions for growing apple trees.

Culture & Attractions

As well the town's many choirs and orchestras who regularly perform in the towns churches and schools, there are a range of festivals, railway events and family fun days that take place throughout the year to entertain locals and visitors. The racecourse is also a popular destination and offers various events througout the year. Taunton Castle, The Museum of Somerset, Hestercombe Gardens and Woodlands Castle are also in the top visitor attractions as voted by TripAdvisor users.
